Sri Lanka Day

|

Countdown to Sri Lanka Day - Friday 16th July 2010

Balshaw's is delighted that we will be visited by Dr Andrew Gray, a Herpetologist and Amphibian Conservationist from the University of Manchester who specialises in exotic frogs! His team recently discovered a frog in Costa Rica that was thought to be extinct! He is hoping to give students an idea of his work with amphibians, including husbandry, research, fieldwork and education in the hope of sharing his experience, expertise and interest in these wonderful creatures.

Year 8 pupils will hear Dr Grays presentation on amphibians, including those that live in Sri Lanka, and get to meet some of his frogs!

Dr Gray is also giving a Public and Community Presentation at Balshaw's at 6.00pm in the hall on Friday 16th July. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Bring your parents, grandparents and brothers and sisters! Come and meet the frogs!

European Day of Languages

26th September 2009

To celebrate the European Day of Languages, the modern foreign languages department have arranged events throughout the whole week, leading up to the 26th. Each day the 'Thought for the Day' is provided by them and the canteen will provide 'global' dishes at breakfast, break and lunchtime.

On Monday 21st September, a class of year 8 and a class of year 11 had a lesson in Portugese, lead by Head of Languages at Cardinal Newman College.

In the evening 11 languages were on offer for taster lessons. These included Portugese, Japanes, Welsh and Russian. Parents, pupils and staff were all invited to take part in learning a new language. The international food quiz, which was held during the interval, was won by Maddie who enjoyed the prize of a tin of chocolates.

Here are some of the foods featured in the quiz

Staff were provided with a continental breakfast before their morning meeting on Friday and pupils and staff were invited to attend school dressed in the National dress of their chosen country. Everyone enjoyed the croissants and pain au chocolat !

Miss O'Briens year 9 class enjoyed French food tasting.

Pupils, parents and staff enjoyed a meal at Casa Caterina
